The Shira Day Hike offers a unique chance to explore Mount Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude landscapes without a full summit expedition. Starting from the Shira Plateau (3,500m) — one of the most stunning areas on the mountain — this hike rewards you with expansive views of Kibo Peak, Shira Cathedral, and the vast plains below.
Unlike the rainforest routes, Shira begins at a higher elevation, making it ideal for those who want to experience the alpine scenery, volcanic formations, and open moorlands of Kilimanjaro in just one day.

Detailed Itinerary

Day Tour: Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Shira Plateau – Moshi
Morning: You’ll be picked up early from your hotel in Moshi and driven (approximately 2–3 hours) to Londorossi Gate (2,250m) for registration. Continue by 4x4 vehicle through the forest to the Shira Plateau starting point (around 3,500m).
Late Morning to Midday: Begin your guided hike across the wide-open moorlands toward Shira Cathedral, a dramatic volcanic rock formation offering panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding plains. Enjoy your packed lunch in this scenic spot.
Afternoon: After exploring the area and taking photos, descend back to your starting point and drive back to Moshi, arriving by early evening.
Total hiking time: 3–4 hours (round trip)
Elevation range: 3,500m–3,900m
