ROUTE OVERVIEW

Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and an often-overlooked gem compared to its famous neighbor, Kilimanjaro. Located within Arusha National Park, Meru offers a unique trekking experience that combines spectacular scenery, diverse ecosystems, and abundant wildlife.
The standard trek to the summit takes 3 to 4 days, beginning with a hike through lush montane forest where trekkers often encounter giraffes, buffalos, monkeys, and a variety of birdlife. As the trail ascends, the landscape transitions into heath and moorland dotted with giant lobelias, before reaching the alpine desert and dramatic crater rim.
The final ascent to Socialist Peak begins in the early morning, rewarding climbers with breathtaking views of the Meru crater, the sheer cliffs of the inner wall, and Mount Kilimanjaro rising majestically on the horizon. Accommodation is provided in mountain huts (Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut), making the trek more comfortable than tented routes.
Though less known than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is highly regarded for its challenging yet manageable trek, its striking volcanic landscapes, and its excellent role as both a standalone adventure and an acclimatization climb before tackling Kilimanjaro.
