The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It’s one of the quieter and drier routes, offering a unique wilderness experience with fewer climbers. The gradual ascent profile makes it ideal for trekkers seeking a less crowded trail and a good chance of summit success.
You’ll pass through beautiful forests, moorlands, and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
DAY O: ARRIVAL TO TANZANIA.
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro international airport and
transferred to your hotelin Moshi town, you will meet your guide who will
brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure
you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented
on this day.
DAY 1: MOSHI – NALEMORU GATE – SIMBA CAMP
• Elevation: 1,950m to 2,650m

• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest
Drive from Moshi to Nalemoru Gate (Rongai Gate) where registration takes place. The hike begins through farmland and pine forest, with chances to spot colobus monkeys. The trail climbs gently to reach Simba Camp, offering beautiful views over the Kenyan plains.

DAY 2: SIMBA CAMP – SECOND CAVE CAMP
• Elevation: 2,650m to 3,450m
• Distance: 9km
• Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, trek through moorland terrain with open views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Stop for lunch at Second Cave Camp, a scenic spot surrounded by rugged hills.

DAY 3: SECOND CAVE CAMP – KIKILEWA CAMP
• Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m
• Distance: 6km
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
Continue your gradual climb, crossing small valleys and ridges before reaching Kikilewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley. This short hike allows for great acclimatization.

DAY 4: KIKILEWA CAMP – MAWENZI TARN CAMP

• Distance: 6km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steep climb up grassy slopes leads to a stunning campsite beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second highest peak. Enjoy the afternoon resting or exploring the nearby ridges.

DAY 5: MAWENZI TARN – KIBO HUT

• Distance: 9km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast lunar landscape, to reach Kibo Hut, your base camp before the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for an early morning start to the peak.

DAY 6: KIBO HUT – UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO HUT – MOSHI
• Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,720m
• Distance: 16km total
• Hiking Time: 10–13 hours
• Habitat: Arctic / Moorland
Begin your summit attempt around midnight. The steep ascent to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim is the most challenging part. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your success, descend to Horombo Hut for lunch and a short rest before heading down to Moshi (transfer by vehicle).

DAY 7: HOTEL TO AIRPORT
After breakfast, you continue with your travel plans or take a transfer to
the Kilimanjaro Airport.
